I started designing websites about ten years ago. Of course
they were just for myself and did not amount to much.
However, lately, I have been commissioned to help other
people get their own websites up and running, including
building them myself to the design and function
requirements of the clients. I must warn everyone that I am
by no means a professional designer and I would not take on
a project that would take many hundreds of hours to
complete. I work full-time and do webdesign in my spare
time.
I make no bones about the fact that I have very definite
ideas about what is good and what is not on the web.
Although a great many people have high speed broadband, I
still feel that efficiency of design is important. I
believe that use of imagery can be very powerful. A picture
does paint a thousand words after all. However, gratuitous
use of flashy graphics just makes pages more difficult to
read and find your way around. Also, I have better things
to do with my time than having to wait for animations to
load.
I also firmly believe that there are too many quick and
dirty things that can be done on the web, which some
designers use, just because they can. I find it incredible
that so called professional designers pay little or no heed
to the agreed worldwide standards that ensure that
everyone, whatever equipment and software they are using,
can view their pages.
So, all the sites I design have a clean, simple aesthetic
(in my opinion) to get the desired message across. I also
use design tools that ensure that all my work complies with
the current worldwide standards as much as possible.
If I haven't put you off yet with my little sermon, and you
still feel I can be of service, please do not hesitate to
get in touch.
